Writer's Workshop: Before I Was a Mom

It's Thursday and since I am doing a week of meme's I decided to do Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop.

Mama's Losin' It

Before I was a mom...

I spent money on clothes and shoes for me (without guilt).
I had a clean house.
I had 130 children that I saw each day (except weekends and summers, oh and holidays). Nice, right?
I could read a book in one sitting.
I used to sleep like the dead.  I once slept through a 4 alarm fire a block from my apartment.
We would decide to go away for the weekend on Friday night.
I would cook fancy schmancy meals.
I loved planting flowers. (Emily likes to pick flowers, roots and all.)
The only games I played were Scrabble, poker, and Monopoly.

...something was missing.

I'm right now thinking how sad it is that I can't remember any of those things. It was 19+ years ago. The good thing is being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel when hubby and I will be back there again. AAHHH...the circle of life. :)

Visiting from Mama Kats...

Oh ... the good old days. How I miss them. What was missing was an appreciation for how easy things were. I think back on those days now and think "You had no idea how easy you had it then."

I wish I could say I had a clean house before I had kids... at least I had the "opportunity" to have a clean house ;).

What a neat meme! Life was so much different before I became a mom, but I can barely remember it because I was 18 when my first child was born.

Reading a book in one sitting sounds like a dream! Can you imagine having the time to play a game of Monopoly now? That is an hours long commitment!

Oh, the last minute weekend getaway!! So fun! I have started planning and packing already for our next trip, and let's just say it's more than a day away! Takes just a tad longer to get organized these days... and just a few more suitcases. But worth it.

You're right - something was missing before and now that we know the difference, there's no going back.

You can still cook fancy meals. It will get you out of the plain ol' type of meals that we think the kids will like. It gives the kids an opportunity to have something different and expand their palate. My step children were always surprised when they found out that their friends didn't have this or that when they've been eating it for years.

Curious if you combined the games together and used Monopoly money to play poker— sounds like fun to me.

Thanks for sharing,

According to my husband, it is only fun with real money. He and his friends BK (before kids) used to have a weekly poker night.

I totally agree with expanding your child's horizons through food. I just wish sometimes that I had the time I used to to spend three hours cooking a meal.

We have a looonggg time before we get back to what it was like BK.

It definitely takes much more time and organization to go away for a weekend (with and without kids). Yet, I wouldn't give up this time for anything (even though there are days where I wonder when my sanity went on vacation).

My husband's family has Monopoly tournaments at the holidays or when they are all together. It is totally cut throat. They even have rules that are not in the official rules. It's a riot to watch them.

Before we had kids, we would go out in the middle of the week. We would go places on a whim. My house was usually clean. I got regular hair cuts. Life was good. And then I had kids and everything changed...for the better.

Is it terrible to say you had me drooling over a couple of these things? Reading a book is such a total luxury...uninterrupted? Wow!

Regular haircuts-that was a good one, Lourie! I forgot about those.

It's the clean house that really gets me. Oh and I used to kick butt at Cranium, now I never get to play games other than chutes and ladders. UGH.

Lots of yummy love,
